About Business Ethics

Business Ethics was founded in 1987, three years before the start of the 1990’s “Bull Market” and more than a decade before the turn-of-the-century financial scandals at companies such as Enron, WorldCom and Adelphia. In the years since its founding, Business Ethics has become a focal point for reporting, analysis and information in the field of corporate responsibility.

Business Ethics works at the intersection of business and society.  It reports on the fields of business ethics and corporate governance, tracking major regulatory changes and their impact on corporate behavior.  It also examines the broader social role of companies and their accountability to multiple stakeholders – shareholders, employees, customers and the communities where companies do business.

All these subject areas are reflected in the annual Business Ethics 100 Best Corporate Citizens [0] list, which ranks the largest publicly-held U.S. companies for their performance as corporate citizens.  A much smaller group of companies – small and large, public and private – is honored each year through the Business Ethics Awards [0], which recognize firms for their singular performance and leadership roles in corporate responsibility.

The mission of Business Ethics remains – as it was in 1987 – “to serve that growing community of professionals and individuals striving to work and invest in responsible ways.”

The Business Ethics audience is a diverse group which includes executives, investors, regulators, activists, academics and students.   The mission of Business Ethics remains – as it was in 1987 – “to serve that growing community of professionals and individuals striving to work and invest in responsible ways.”

As the field of corporate responsibility has changed over 20 years, so too has Business Ethics.  It is now published exclusively on the web (the quarterly magazine ceased publication in 2006), offering current commentary and analysis on subjects in the news. Business Ethics is owned by New Mountain Media LLC, a New York-based media company.
